Intel and Nvidia Reign Supreme in October Steam Hardware Survey, AMD Lags Behind
Steam’s October hardware survey provides a snapshot of the hardware its user base is currently running on the statistics, highlighting pretty clear preferences across the board for both processors and graphics cards. Intelligence continues to rule the intel CPU space with about 66% of the user base, while AMD trails with 33%. This trend is quite reflective of Intel’s dominant position in the laptop market, where it has a much larger share of AMD. We don’t know which individual models of CPU users of the surveys are, but because Steam does not provide too many details concerning the model name of their CPUs, its lead, most likely, has come from the laptop gamers who compose a significant percentage of its users.
The best graphics card is from Nvidia, which a gamer’s heart prefers; even the company’s xx60 series comes highly in preference. The GeForce RTX 3060 currently tops the desktop GPUs, and the laptop version is the GeForce RTX 4060 leads in the mobile. Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3060 desktop GPU is the number one position, which actually fits well with the traditional xx60 lineup because this has always been popularly known for its excellent performance and relatively affordable price for gaming. The GeForce RTX 1650 has already been through two generations, yet it’s still at the fourth spot on the list, beating some newer models, like the RTX 2060. That in itself already suggests that people are clinging to older but reliable hardware for whatever reason – be it price or stable performance for most games.
However, the ranks say that the popularity of AMD is low. Thus, the first AMD on this list is a Radeon brand that will likely be the integrated Radeon 780M. Discrete GPUs: Here, AMD comes with Radeon RX 6600 and RX 580, while Nvidia comes with the high-range GeForce RTX 4090, which is above both of them. Still, below the much older Nvidia GeForce RTX 1650 Super, AMD’s advanced card, Radeon RX 7900 XTX, is ranked; hence, the Steam group prefers Nvidia.
Regarding operating systems, Windows 11 is the most widely used OS among Steam users. Most Steam users opt for this version as opposed to previous versions. The screen resolution is at 1080p. This might be because of compatibility with many hardware setups. Linux accounts for just about 2% of Steam’s demographic. Although Steam Deck has gained much popularity, its use remains relatively minimal among the mainstream gaming crowd.
These trends are expected to be stable for now. However, new releases from Intel, Nvidia, and AMD in early 2025 may cause a shake-up since gamers will update to the latest technology.
