Todd Blanche Tapped as Deputy AG in Trump’s Justice Overhaul
WASHINGTON (AP) – President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday named Todd Blanche, a veteran attorney from his legal defense team, to serve as Deputy Attorney General. Blanche, who played critical roles in defending Trump during his hush money trial and other high-profile federal cases, is poised to help drive Trump’s ambitious overhaul of the Justice Department.
“Todd is an outstanding attorney who will be a vital leader in repairing what has been a broken System of Justice for far too long,” Trump said in a statement Thursday.
Blanche’s nomination, subject to Senate confirmation, coincides with Trump’s broader reshaping of the Justice Department leadership. A former federal prosecutor, Emil Bove, will serve as Acting Deputy Attorney General until Blanche is confirmed. At the same time, D. John Sauer, who successfully argued Trump’s presidential immunity case before the Supreme Court, has been named Solicitor General.
Blanche’s extensive legal career includes representing Trump in cases involving allegations of election interference and the mishandling of classified documents. His legal strategies, particularly in delaying federal prosecutions, have yielded favorable outcomes for Trump, including rulings that stalled or dismissed cases. Blanche also defended Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman, securing a dismissal of mortgage fraud charges in New York.
As Deputy Attorney General, Blanche will oversee the day-to-day activities of the Justice Department, playing an essential part in putting Trump’s vision of systemic reform into action. His professional background includes over a decade as a federal prosecutor, a leadership position in a major law firm, and years of high-profile legal advocacy.
Reflecting on his career, Blanche thanked the opportunity to return to the Justice Department, where he started as a paralegal and later served as a federal prosecutor. On the eve of Trump’s wholly transformative agenda with a Republican-led Senate poised to confirm his nominees, this marks a new direction for American legal leadership.
