Cumbria’s £400M Digital Boost: Superfast Connectivity Transforms Region
Cumbria is digitally transforming, with over £400 million invested in digital infrastructure through commercial and publicly funded programs. More than 95% of homes and businesses now enjoy superfast access at speeds above 30Mbps, while 62% are gigabit-capable.
Mobile connectivity has been enhanced, with more than 91% of the county receiving outdoor 4G coverage from at least one mobile provider and 65% receiving coverage from all four major UK networks.
Peter Thornton, Digital Champion for Digital Infrastructure in Westmorland and Furness, said:
Huge strides have been made in connecting homes and businesses, and this work will continue to ensure that no one is left behind. During Christmas, companies can leverage these advancements to access online tools, enhance efficiency, and attract more customers.
Harrison Ward, an outdoorsman, speaks to a more significant benefit of connectivity:
“Online access fights isolation, brings communities together, and provides lifelines. I love the outdoors, but staying connected is vital for work, emergencies, and personal growth.
Cllr Chris Southward, Cabinet Member for Digital Connectivity at Cumberland Council, said: “I would encourage everyone to look at upgrade options to see firsthand the transformative impact of improved connectivity.”
Businesses such as Gift and Stitch are already feeling the benefits. Founder Dawn Richardson said:
“Reliable broadband is crucial, especially in the Christmas rush, meeting consumer demand while making the local offerings available to a wider audience.”
